Grooms Lodge is perfectly placed for exploring some of Devon’s best local spots. From sandy beaches and charming coastal towns to countryside attractions and relaxing wellness experiences, there’s plenty to discover within a short drive.

Slapton Sands stretches in a long, sweeping curve of shingle backed by a freshwater ley and low dunes, where the rhythmic crash of waves mingles with the calls of seabirds wheeling overhead., it’s the nearest beach to The Grooms Lodge. A short way along the coast, Bee Sands feels more intimate always reminds us of Greece, a sheltered ribbon of pebbles with brightly painted boats pulled up on the shore and the scent of salt and seaweed hanging in the brisk breeze. Batham, quieter and more tucked away, has an untamed charm: dark, weed-draped rocks jut from the sand, creating tidal pools that glint in the changing light and invite slow, curious exploration. Further along, the beach near South Molton offers a broader sweep of sand where the tide retreats to reveal wide, rippled flats, perfect for long, reflective walks beneath a big, open sky. Butter Bay is softer and more secluded, a gently curving inlet where pale sand is framed by low cliffs and coarse grasses that whisper in the wind, giving the sense of a hidden sanctuary. Thurlestone’s golden beach lies beneath its famous rock arch, where smooth sand meets shallow, clear water and the surf rolls in lazily, watched over by rugged headlands and patchwork fields. Finally, Blackpool Sands, a crescent of fine shingle hemmed in by steep, tree-clad hills, has an almost Mediterranean feel: the water shifts from deep blue to translucent green along the shore, and the air is filled with the murmur of waves and the soft hum of holidaymakers enjoying this sheltered, scenic bay. Dog friendly are all but Blackpool Sands (Winter OK) and Bantham. Best kids beaches- South Molton Sands and Thurleston as shallower water and soft sand Best surfing beach is Bantham- amazing waves and a car park in the Summer with lots of delicious mobile food vans. Stand out is the Pizza van!
